My Year of Meaningful (2011)

"Quality takes you out of yourself, makes you aware of the world around you." - R.M. Pirsig

Weird wild stuff

It's so bizarre - one part of The Story of The Baby, is that the reason she popped on the scene so fast was because we were "supposed" to have been placed with a pregnant girl who was due to give birth in August. Well, what ended up happening is that the hospital was going to give The Joo the boot, so she needed a family like *yesterday* so that's why we got called in. Well, we always wondered about the "other baby", and what would go down there... I mean we had already gotten mentally kind of attached to the idea of that baby, but obviously we go along with destiny when it pokes you in the face.

Well anyway, in a funky twist of fate, we hear from Social Worker that that baby was born yesterday, (early) and was also a girl (so we would've gotten a girl anyway, much to my bamboozlement)... and... has just been placed with a family from none other than... my own home country!! Holy cow! Talk about a child being destined to be an American!

But the even stranger twist, is that Social Worker phones yesterday to ask about the holiday apartments we're staying in, because Other Baby's new family is coming over this weekend from the States, and will need a place to stay.

SO HOW WEIRD IS THAT!? They're going to be staying like right next door to us... we're going to be right next to our Would-Be daughter!? We even bought a couple clothes & necessities for Other Baby (which S.W. has for her now), because we felt bad that us taking The Joo was kinda leaving the pregnant girl in the lurch when she was totally aware that her baby had been placed with us (obviously only for a couple days, as S.W. was able to find this family for her within a day or two of the baby coming) and we're probably going to be seeing those little onesies walking around (well, being carried around) the hallway, within the next week! Wow. I dunno - maybe it's bizarre for me to even be thinking about it, but it is just kinda freaky. And because it's big life-changing-event stuff, me and The Mr. even kinda get the eebie jeebies when we're tempted to make the obligatory "us-kinda" jokes about baby-swapping, etc. Oh well, it's still just another example of how fate works in big ways and makes funny things happen.

OK we're ready to go home now - here are the movies we've seen since last time I wrote:

How to Go on a Date in Queens (bad)
The Upside of Anger (ok)
Away from Her (eh)

I can't wait to go back to G-city, but will miss all the stuff they have here in Whk, like the awesome coffee bar around the corner, the great restaurants up the street, and the very much more "with it" kinda people here. I am also NOT looking forward to having to go back to the office and what not, but ultimately being reunited with the other puppies & having our own bed back will trump all that stuff. Also, having an oven will be nice... I stupidly bought a frozen pizza for us, without realizing we don't have an oven. Which meant I had to cook it in the microwave which ended up in a floppy wet pizza, which I then tried to dry out by putting *directly on* the electric burner of the stovetop, which didn't necessarily do what I wanted but rather ended up giving me a kitchen full of smoke. Awesome.

Life in NAM

ahhhhhh whyyyyyyyyy do children have to make you sick!?!?

OK so she already gave us both the flu in her first few days, and now we all have sore throats and colds. grrrr... I should've seen this one coming though, as coming out of K. State hospital she was probably carrying every bug in the book. eish! we went there yesterday to see what it looked like (just to make a visual connection with where our little pumpkin seed spent the first 3 months of her life) and jeeeeeeeeeebus, the Dr. was right when she said "she was probably better off in the river!" Apparently there's still no food there. Although reportedly the bats that were living in the operating room have recently been exterminated.

Well anyway since we've been here we've been to a sushi restaurant (woo hoo! although the sushi was relatively average), a german restaurant (with "Fascinating Steve"), and gotten a movie rental membership. I've been eating up the posh gym (even through sickness! I can't help it! it's too awesome!), and we found a good hiking trail.

Fascinating Steve is funny. He's about 37-39 years old, American, and a film maker. Apparently he was one of the big directors on that Leo DiC enviro-film. Now he's making green documentaries all over the place. He is just as gay as he is... confident (?). Our dinner was interesting to say the least. The Joo was very good and hid under the table in her little chair, sleeping like a rock, even when the crazy german owner's dog came up to her and started barking in her face. Trooper.

I love the shops here, at least you can find stuff like Greek dips and organic produce and all that good stuff. And there's Sooooooooooooo many more restaurants we have to try. Next weekend we're going to go to the coast (3 hrs west of here)... my heart is longing to see actual waves and sand and the good German Brauhaus es that are out there. ahhh... I haven't been there since I was living in Pretoria 9 years ago and came out to do some sand boarding and quad biking on the dunes all by my lonesome. Back in my "I gotta go find myself" days of hitchhiking and wandering. All I remember thinking was that I simply HAD to get back there someday with the love of my life because it is just all too beautiful and romantic to be wasted on a single backpacker totally uninterested in anything but where the next beer was geographically located.

Since we only have 4 TV channels (which all suck) it's great to have the video club membership, notwithstanding the fact that said video shop is in the straight-ghetto and I'm nervous even leaving Billy tied up outside the shop! And the selection isn't all that great. But we've watched, so far:

Kite Runner
Heartbreak Kid (with Ben Stiller), and
Step Brothers

We'll take a walk down there in a couple hours and get something else. I'm trying to think of 3 non-new movies that I actually want to see, because you can get 3 for 3 days... but I always freeze up in the video store and can NEVER REMEMBER what I just said I wanted to look for. Ugh!

Why must internet be such a precious commodity?

It is so frustrating -
at first we were working off a pay-as-you-go internet scratch card kind of thingy, and that was slow as molasses going up a hill in January (er, July, here). So we scrapped that idea and went and got this 3G internet dongle, which is speedy gonzales but we are limited to 1G of net time, and then you have to buy a new one. Ugh. And it's 'spensive. of course. AND it keeps breaking up and putting the ixnay on my gtalk and gchat conversations. grrrrrrrrrrr...

We got a 24 hour flu yesterday/day before. It was torture. The kind where you get nausia and it takes every ounce of your human power to even lift your head up. But now we're ok and I'm thinking of going to the gym. I really. love. that. gym.

Our american friends who live here in Windy, D&L, are too funny - they're in the states right now on holiday (naturally! we're in their hometown and they're overseas!) and we were complaining to them over email that it sucks not to know anyone here and have no human contact, and within 24 hours we get emails now from some guy named Steve saying "HEY! It's me, Steve! D&L wrote me and told me to get in touch with you so we can go out! When should we get together for dinner!?" So here we are again, getting "set up" by friends our parents' ages. But apparently D says that Steve is "fascinating"! (I'm laughing at that - I can't wait to see what D's interpretation of someone who is "fascinating" is!) So I guess the 3 of us have a date on Friday!

In the meantime there's an american couple from the DC area staying downstairs from us in these apartments who just moved here & are looking for a house at the moment, so kind of in the same predicament we are. And they have a dog & a baby. Except the baby is not a baby, but rather about 3 yrs old, but ACTS like a baby. So the jury is still out on that social outlet - I watched that child dump a fistfull of sand in her doggy's eyes and the mommy just sighed.

Oh yes, the permanent adoption order was signed in court by the Magistrate yesterday (21/7) so we are now officially, irreversably, and permanently how-you-say, "parentals". Woo hoo! Now we're just waiting on her new birth certificate with our names on it, and then we can apply for her passport and export that baby back to BW! Hot diggity!

a minor detail i may have neglected to mention...

Soooo, keeping in mind this will only be read by the miniscule handful of people that
A) I truly care about, &
B) are silly enough & lacking better judgement than to read the nonsense that I spew here...
I figured I might as well blow the lid on this teeny little item I keep meaning to mention- that being as of yesterday The Mr. & I brought home with us (and by "home" I mean our lovely self-catering holiday apartment in Windhoek) our new little daughter... :)
It's a true story, a few months long, but one best saved for emails & phone calls etc and likely further blogging extravaganzas, but Im typing this on my damn iphone and it's not only tedious and time consuming but my patience is only so good after having to get up and feed Her Majesty at the butt ass crack of dawn! Hello parenthood!! So in the meanwhile the basics are sort of along these lines: she's 3 months old. She's hella cute. We got the call from the social worker on Wednesday (just after i booked our tickets to CapeTown, naturally), were in the car by Thurs morning, here by 10pm (after leaving a wake of fire behind us on the Trans-Kalahari Hiway) and had her in our flat by 11am Friday. Talk about baptism by fire! She has a great personality and will definitely be a real trooper. She was found by a cop in a dry river bed on April3, so that will be her birthday. They reckon she wasnt more than 24 hrs old. She was nekkid & weighed only 1.5kg/4lbs. So she spent her first 3 months in a hospital while they ran all the tests and did a criminal investigation. On the day the hospital said "we gotta cut this kid loose now, she cant just live here", we got the call. So anyway the temporary adoption order is through and now we just sit here and wait for the big paperwork to be done, and her passport. Then it's back to BW, and on with life!

Sooo, although this is super huge it's weird telling people bc we had kept it kinda hush-like since after we decided to do The Thing, we didnt really know where it would take us and when... So I got about 4 Wks of sittin here in Windhoek to start coming up with creative ways to freak friends & family out when dropping the bomb. This is attempt No.1.

Sooo yeah... I promise not to turn this into a baby blog and post nothing but photos of all things from the Diaper Kingdom. But once we get the wi-fi in this place up and running I'll do something about proving that this is not just a delayed April Fools.

In the meantime, my cellphone & email still works and we are kinda bamboozled & dazed!! Feel free to remind us we are COMPLETELY NUTS.

As you were.

Catty pie

Isnt it female chemistry amazing???

It never ceases to amaze me how you put 2 females together in a room, I dont care, with people, without people, whatever, but just TOGETHER IN A ROOM... and somehow, they'll know without even so much as spending more than 2 minutes together, if they're "compatible"!!

I swear I'm more tuned into this than ever, in my 30s. When I was younger I would've dismissed that as a totally rude and judgemental notion about girls - but now that I think back, I can safely say that I'm not actually friends with anyone whom I would've gotten a bad "girl vibe" from, on the first time I met them. OK some of those chicks might be in my extended social circle, sure, but as far as real friends of the female persuasion go, all mine are people who I DIDNT have the same experience I had last week at our old friends' place for lunch...

...they are always trying to "set us up" with other "young people" (which is really funny - it would make good sitcom fodder, actually, the people they "select" for us to become friends with.... just because they're in our age group). This wasn't the first "set up" lunch we've had with them - they're older than my own parents, by the way. You know how there's always some story line in a comedy or tv show where some white couple has a black friend or a Hispanic friend and so they try to set their buddy up with "this girl you'll have soooo much in common with... after all, she's black/Hispanic too!" and she turns out to be a raging nutjob bunny-boiler??

Well so anyway this english chick only just had to walk into the room and say 3 sentences and I already knew this was not a love match. But it still has me thinking about it weeks later. It's not that she said/did anything WRONG, it's just the vibe wafting in the air about her was all wrong. Whatever it was that she was sending out, it was just screaming "WE (as in me & her) would not work". Even though she talked about going to the rugby. Even though she is interested in wildlife. Even though she's an expat. Even though we're the same age. It just wouldn't be right. Amazing.

Now it's got me thinking about a couple gals in the Animal Peeps that would be similar situations. Hmmm... speaking volumes to myself.... nevermind.

OH! I'm also not saying that it's not overcome-able. I'm not saying that (let's call one "+" and one "-" just for argument's sake... even though in science that would mean they attract instead of repel each other, but nevertheless) Girl + and Girl - cant eventually become friends and hang together and have a perfectly amicable relationship! I'm just saying it will never be the REAL DEAL. Like they're never going to be catfight-free, and they'll probably never have that genuine love for each other that they would've had if the vibes had been right. Like I said, I have lots of anti-me girls in my life, but I know that the catty-factor between us is a lot higher than me with my real friends. And I know that I would never 100% trust them, or trust that they would trust me 100% and so on. And why should they!? It's those chicks that I am probably thinking in my head "jeez, I'm glad my brother isn't dating THAT cow!".... because deep down, that's how it was always gonna be. Based on information transmitted through the air waves from the first day the introduction was even made. Amazing.

I don't think that happens with guys. That's all I'm sayin.

Revisiting the "just dont understand these people" topic again

OK So now they've done it. Junior & Mma Finance have done the gigantic expensive "traditional" (my ass!) wedding ceremony, and we just looked at the photos today. Naturally every single person in the photos was one of HER family and friends and krew, while HE had maybe one uncle, a cousin, a brother and a mother there. I'm just sayin...

But now on comes the nonsense again. Mma Finance is "SOOOOooo Religious", right? (that's why she had her cleavage hanging out like Peg Bundy during the ceremony, I know) So anyway after the wedding she went into an almost-week-long lock-in in her church where they fasted for like 5 days. Whatever. That's not what I wanted to point out. What I wanted to point out is how Junior comes in to work and says that this weekend they got a "prophecy" that they would be having a baby girl. He just doesn't know when.

Ahem.

Yes, indeed, he is the kind of boy who believes that prophecies determine pregnancies, not the joining together in sweet horny bliss of a man's sperm and a woman's egg after a happy dance that we residents of the Planet EARTH like to call "bonking". Just a side note, I found it interesting that when he told all of us this, the sum total of ALL of us simply looked straight ahead and said...... nothing.

Crickets.... tumbleweed....

...more crickets.

It's not that any of us DIDNT have something to say. Oh hell no. I'm sure if any of the 3 of us who were there for this little "announcement" would've opened our mouths it would've gone something like this:

Me: "So you're trying to tell us you're finally schtupping her? Or what?"

The Mr.: "You're an idiot, you know that, right? She's going to get you to knock her up so that she never has to get a job."

Leto: "Dude, kids cost money!"

I don't know what makes me angrier... The fact that she already sucked him dry with her Wedding Fever to the point that now he goes to bed hungry for the rest of this month because he's already blew his entire paycheck on buying her family some damn cows and suits and firewood that they didnt NEED, and now she's obviously replaced Wedding Fever with Baby Fever and will probably make sure she gets pregnant so that she can come up with a brand new excuse to not get a job & pull some weight... or, the fact that he seriously believes that she's a prophet. Yeah ok that's a long sentence but DAMN!

He seriously believes that this cleavage-dangling, materialistic shopaholic, homework-cheating, lie-telling, spoiled brat hypocrite has a direct line to God and has been chosen by Him to bear his prophecy to the masses. ugggggggggghhhhhhhhh.

Who should I be mad at? Her for being such a hypocrite cow, or him for being gullible? Since obviously it's none of my business, I should just let it go and ignore, I know. BUT! The Mr. is right when he says he can see her becoming a problem for the company. I know it sounds far-fetched at first, but truthfully... your spouse always rubs off on you somehow. Whether it's in behaviour or mannerisms or otherwise. What if her "it's ok to tell little white lies, even if you're a prophet" mentality rubs off on him... The Mr. already suspects him of adding on extra little side-trips in the office truck when he wasn't supposed to, and then not copping to it. But she also makes him stay up all night praying, fasting for days on end, etc., etc., and quite frankly I believe one needs SLEEP and FOOD to be able to keep their concentration levels up at an adequate standard during a 40-hour work week. So sue me! Not to mention I believe she's the kind of chick who would plant ideas in his head that he could be making more money elsewhere, or that if (heaven forbid) he would ever get the sack from us, he should take us to Labour court!

So now it's babies. He still has no money, she still hasn't finished college and gotten a job, and they still can't afford a car nor find a place to live. And quite frankly he won't be getting a raise anytime soon, considering his level of effort at work is appearing to be directly proportional to the amount of time he spends eschewing sleep at her "all night prayer sessions", and getting 4,000,000 calls on his cellphone per day (from her). But all of a sudden the prophecies say babies. Greaaaat. The bank balance is a big fat 0.00, and she's got Baby Fever. AGH!

Konkin' heads together like coconuts

I just sat through the most un-necessary, waste-of-time, piss-me-off meeting ever! Of course it stems from the presentation I had to make last week, where a bunch of people who didn't read my giant document from hell asked a bunch of ignorant, dumb-ass questions that dialed the WTF factor up to 11....

so without telling a boring government-work-related story of no interest to me nor the fly on the wall, the essence is that the (Department) moderator of that meeting MADE me hold this 2nd meeting at our office, where Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dumb, and Fancy-pants McGee could come over here and ask our groundwater specialist all their assenine questions, in a seperate forum, away from all the non-interested people. So that's what I just had to sit through. The problem being, it WASNT Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dumb, and Fancy-pants McGee that showed up, it was their BOSSES. Who are clearly more intelligent, and weren't even AT the first meeting asking questions. So these big gov't bosses are all sittin here in my office goin "Why TF are we here? We understand all this crap... Why did we have to come?" USELESS!! TOTALLY USELESS!!

I just wanted to konk all their heads together and go "well GREAT if you understand it, so Why TF are you sending your idiot bastard juvenile henchmen to the meetings where they have to be seen to critique expert work!?!?!?" AGGGGGGGGH!

Slappin' faces, man. Slappin' faces.

I am treading thin ice though. I have a terminal disorder where I can NOT look people in the eye whose face I want to slap. And so all these big shots are here in my office and I'm talking at them through clenched teeth and dagger eyes. I know it's bad, but I can't help it. This is why The Mr. has to be the P.R. side of our business. Unfortunately though he was already triple-booked at a bunch of other meetings. Regardless, I know they felt my wrath. But that doesn't help - it probably only makes them want to eat me alive the next time they see me. I need to go to "sensitivity training for normal people who have to deal with government people". Does that exist?

Two of them had to go to the bathroom while they were here, where I just posted my bitchy sign about "if you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be neat and wipe the seat", and my amazingly detailed graphic of a toilet seat with drips on it, that I just made yesterday. I noted that after the meeting was over, the toilet seat was left up and the toilet left UN FLUSHED!!! AGGGGGGH!

I have had it with work. Or mainly, i've had it with people. People pissing on my toilet AND my mojo!!

I am also having it *up to here* with the Animal Peeps. This is SO my last year on the committee. I won't even explain farther - but there, grievance aired.

And ending on a positive note, I'm looking forward to this weekend where the one organization I'm a part of that I actually LOVE, the Harriers, are having the weekly run at our place. So that means the Mr. and I will be setting out the track on Saturday and hopefully everyone will be pleased with it on sunday. Yay.
