My Year of Meaningful (2011)

"Quality takes you out of yourself, makes you aware of the world around you." - R.M. Pirsig

Day 3

Reilly-less day 3. Still sad. Entire north side covered in posters. Waiting. Guilting.

Plan for today: Take a trip up the hill to the knacker camp on Spring Lane and see if they have her tied up there amongst the caravans. Jim says that's how his neighbour found their lost dog. But at least they feed them and give them water. OK so they tie them up and they have to sleep out in the cold, but normally they're looked after.

On the brighter side (sigh), I am very very excited about our trip to Dan/Romania in May... just booked the tickets today and so now it feels even closer. We'll be meeting Jéan in London and flying with him, to Iasi, via Bucharest. Martin is coming in from Amsterdam to Bucharest on the same day, but he'll be arriving much earlier and taking the train up to Iasi himself. Who knows what Urban's plans are. (the hubster's hope would be that he's not coming... but that's a different story)

Anyway.
I was dead curious to find out what the bloody hell is gonna happen, being as the last Romanian Orthodox wedding I was at was........ ummmmm, never? I asked him if we'd have to sacrifice a chicken for him or hand over a young orphan as a wedding gift, etc. Dan filled me in. Due to my lack of enthusiasm or spirit, I shall hereby cut and paste, and leave it.

ok, so first of all, don't worry.
I think I told u that we treat foreign people as kings in our country. no matter what u do, what u wear, and so on, it will immediately be addopted as new trend or fashion.
Besides, everybody will kiss your ass....so rather prepare for that, I would say.

wedding traditions here are quite old, u can immagine that, so there is all these rituals which will have to be followed. In a way, it is good , because this way, every step is prepared. So - sorry for this, but no virgin sacrifice required.

Quite boring, huh?
Ok, so will be like this: 10 days before we have to be there to list up for the City Hall, all teh bureaucratic paper works and some medical tests. then starts the pandemonium for us. All the relatives of the bride will be at her place and give advice tothe bride-to-be, what should wear and how. Because the wedding dress is nothing compared to all the other smal stuff required. Some voal, flowers, and donno what else. Meanwhile we will arange all other details for the church and stuff.

There is no rehersal in our tradition, so everybody goes to the church on the wedding day only. Wedding day is pretty much like this:about noon - ceremony at the city hall 6 Pm - church religious ceremony, will take like one hour, when I will have to do some peculiar stuff - like circle that table 3 times, and kiss the hand of the godfather. After that the couple is walked to the party place like a small travel group or somethin. Then, finally, 7 pm will start the party at the restaurant. Now, all the events before are not compulsory, exept for the bride and gromm, and godfather and his wife. Is the first time when parents are no longer important anymore.

So, after 7 the party will start, and then there are also some traditional things. For example, the guets will arrive till midnight. One person is at thedoor and pins some flower to everybody. Is some white fabric smallflower. Drinking is compulsory. The bride will be stolen at a certain time in the nignt. There will be negotiation from the groom or godfather to get the bride back. Usually is like one wiskey bottle or something. Cake also. Which has to be cut and so on. One guy will collect the gift enveloppes. then deposit to the godfatheror groom. dancing all night. Opened by the groom and wife. The groom will have to dance pretty much with everybody. And the bride as well. party will last till morning.

And yeah, men wear black. Women, not so much, but is ok to do so. Except for the first kin, which is required to wear any other color but black (women). There are many tradition to this, and I do not know all of it, but I can assure you that is not similar to wedding ceremony abroad. After that, nothing in particular, usually everybody takes off and that's that.
