Yes ok I wallowed about turning 30. But here's how it went down:
I faced the big day with grief and heartbreak (there's still some serious regrets that I have about leaving the 20's Club), and ended the day all smiles and friggin' butterflies n' puppy dogs. :D
No jive. I turned that frown upside-down, bee-yotch.
And it had nothing to do with getting a new outlook on age, or any brilliant epiphanies involving Zen and the Art of Aging Gracefully.... I just got my shit together and shut the hell up about it. Then the good stuff came out in full force.
Now, it isn't rare for me to brag about my husband, the ace of everything. But he played a major part in ensuring that the day didn't suck all together. The guy is so smart, he actually put some serious elbow grease into planning for d-day. I think he knew that it would be one of those days that people would probably want to leave town if serious precautions weren't taken.
7a.m. I came down the stairs and found a nice card, which was a lovely surprise. Then when I got to work there was a brilliant letter that he'd posted to my office, written on the back of a confirmation sheet for Robert Plant concert tickets (in July). Double nice was the fact that during the day I got a lot of nice emails from friends back home(s) and even a phone call from DeWit in Cape Town. Lots of text messages, and even the guys at work were decent to me. PaulW bought me a cake at lunch time, Darragh gave me a strawberry cheesecake yogurt [deeeeeeeee-vine!] (and even brought me a spoon to eat it with - what a guy), and Donal brought up 2 slices of brown bread, which he had buttered, and upon which he had written "3" and "0", respectively, in mustard.
Rick was just in typical Rick-Form... making a lot of "do you want me to speak up?" jokes and shit like "will I help you down the stairs, madam?", etc.
Anyway, that got my work day taken care of- people kept me laughing and kept laughing AT me for being upset about the number 30, which of course distracted me for an entire 8 hours. When I came home, there was a present there from S&L, a really nice ZEN incense box of asian smelly treasures, cards we'd been tucking away all week from grandparents and parents, and then a few more little things from the mancakes that made the day even better! Heidi&Mike sent me Cranium (SWEET!!!) and the hand-held 20 Questions game, which I was DESPERATE for (thanks guys!!) and we enjoyed a nice glass of Shiraz while we opened cards and boxes, etc. Manchop had another surprise involving tickets: 2 passes for the Munster vs . Perpignon Heinekin Cup rugby game in Dublin in April. Before I can possibly move on to the next sentence I just have to say that there are people out there who would SHOOT me for these tickets. They sold out in 10 minutes FLAT. I am one lucky gal.
We went to the best restaurant in Cork, StarAnise, and had the best calamari, crabclaw/mussel starters, and the best filet of ostrich we've ever had. And the best lamb shank we ever had. If you just LOOKED at the meat it fell off the bone it was so tender. Lots of good conversation, a pre-dinner glass of champagne, a brilliant spanish red that I cant remember the name of now, and it was all great. Walked home happy and full around 10:30 pm and I couldn't complain. It was one nice day.
But when we got home-- it still got better. I got a phone call from Tara in Aus, my long lost (well not really but I hardly ever hear from her) buddy in melbourne. But just before we had gone to bed and were ready to call it a day, I found an I-pod Nano under my pillow. The only thing I had asked for, for the big day.... but I was prepared to move on with life and be more than thankful if I'd just ended the day with tickets to a rock concert and a big important rugby game, but this was just-- perfect.
(Then on top of that and my fruitcake brother rang me in the middle of the night like 4am just to prove he didnt forget. Nice one, J-bob.)
I've been playing with GOD the Pod ever since (what I named the Nano - his full name is Gavin O' Donovan) like, to the point where I'm not getting any work done at work, I'm being late for work, I'm skipping showers, not cooking dinner, etc. But who cares, IT GOT ME OFF THE WHINEY TRAIN TO BITCH N' MOANVILLE, DIDNT IT!!!!
