My Year of Meaningful (2011)

"Quality takes you out of yourself, makes you aware of the world around you." - R.M. Pirsig

Is it Wednesday already?

So it's unbelievably busy at work right now. And most likely will be for the duration of winter. The new "big job" started and is going to keep me jumpin' til dern near October, combined with the fact that we're still tendering for projects all over the place, I have a new intern, and we're short staffed b/c Tutu took that big-money job across town. AGH!

But nonetheless, I persevere and continue to strive for that work/pleasure balance that is one of the main reasons we moved here. I just have to put up with being tired sometimes. Which actually, I'm not really, so, I'm not really sure why I said that. Anyway.

Uh, friday kiddie party was actually tolerable and dare I say quite fun. Mostly because adults ignored kiddies the whole time. Except for when they kept putting on "fashion shows" for us! Which was actually quite a hoot. about 6 or so 9-year-old girls blasting music out onto the back porch where we were sitting/eating/drinking, and parading around single file in fancy dresses and down-right HALLOWEEN costume-style getups that were supposed to be "fashionable". The funniest part was probably the slatherings of french-hoor makeup covering all of them from forehead to collarbone. heh. funny.

But it was my night to drive so the Mr. got to do all the boozing, which didn't matter much because Uba was on the dry that night too and we had a good solid 2-hour sober chin-wag amongst the other girls- Lil, Petra, Kate, etc. There were about 10 of us there to support F&L through their daughter's shriek n' giggle fest. All of us had shit to do the next morning though, so we were cleared out of there by 11 or so, home by midnight.

Saturday was AMAZING. First of all we reverted back to the 5-day autumn that we had about a month ago. The sky was overcast, it wasn't cold, and there was a weird feeling of nearly stormy weather hanging in the air. We went out for breakfast for the first time ever in Gabs, and bumped in to Uba (less than 24 hours since our last jabber-fest) & my new yoga teacher (Lucy) at the Cafe! I'm still absolutely flabbergasted when I actually bump into people we know, here. I still feel like the newbie who should be wandering around in a state of anonymity at all times. But anyway it was cool, I had a groovy frittata and the Mr. had a monsterous omlette and AS YOU DO WHEN YOURE FULL OF BREAKFAST, we headed off to the fabulous Indian Food Fest! Naturally!

It was incredible. Every stall had amazing food. There were curries, snacks, hors d'oveurs, desserts, everything. Definitely worth the 2 Pula entrence fee as well as all the 10Pula plates at each individual stall (and the Cider wagon!). mmmm... dosas... pakoras... bahjees...mmmm. Again we bumped into a familiar face (the only white ones in the crowd! Easy to spot!), Sofia was there so we chatted with her again & continued to stuff our already full faces. I swear every single Indian, Pakistani, Bengali, Sikh, Hindu, Muslim, and other middle-eastern or sub-continent oriented guy and gal in the country was there. Talk about Mecca!!! Fabulous afternoon.

Saturday was aso M's birthday so we went round to her place at night and had a big dinner party which was really fun, I met a couple new faces and had a whopper of a time laughing my ass off with P., chatting with K., and eating the best pumpkin soup ever. Followed by hitting the town (unfortunately) starting at the so-called Irish bar which was PACKED, and we timed it such that by the time we actually got there the bar crowd was 200% wasted and totally annoying, but the birthday girl got her dance on which was all that really mattered. Alas when they finally kicked us out 1/2 of our posse wanted to hit the nightclub at G-West and the other 1/2 (of which sober chauffeur moi and the Mr. were part) wanted to head home, so we did. I delivered R&J safely to their abode and we were home by 2 or so.

Sunday the Mr. and I took out the kayak for 40 minutes of SOLID paddling and my shoulders and biceps are still screaming about it. Went out for dinner at good old Dros where photos were taken of one another across the table, as we've done way too many times for anyone to ever possibly appreciate. But he is oh so very cute so I can't help it. I, on the other hand, get the eejot award for continually looking like a dork. I remarked on sunday (because I believe it's true) that the older I get the less photogenic I get. I used to consider myself photogenic when I was growing up and in college, etc. Now I seem to have lost the "photo smile" and the ability to look cool. Is that just yet another thing that sucks about hitting 30 and beyond?

oh yes, in other totally annoying news, I am now an Aunt again for the 2nd time. It doesn't really faze me much considering I still have yet to even hold the first one, the Blobster. Anyway, Slobke has a new sister. Annoying BIL called to let us know that 4June brought along "Silke". Uh, yeah, that's pronounced "SILK-uh". Just like "LOB-kuh". aint it sweet. Apparently she "has more weight than Lob(ster), but with uh, tiny hands and uh, tiny feet". (direct quote from father) ??? WTF!??!
these damn frisians!
