My Year of Meaningful (2011)

"Quality takes you out of yourself, makes you aware of the world around you." - R.M. Pirsig

Well Balanced Post...plus a complimentary NUH!!

OK for every negative typed today, I'm going to type a positive. (heheheheh can't wait to see how long this lasts!!!)

- {cue whining, pouting music} But I wannnnnnnna go see Split Lip Rayfield playing live at my favourite hometown Blues Club in Columbia on Valentine's Day!!!!!! Boooo hooooooo... It's just sooooo unfairrrrrrrrr!!!!

+ {happy dance music} Exactly one week from today the Mr. and I hop in the car and drive down to Jozi (yeaaa!!!) to hang out with brother Al and anticipate the next-day-arrival of THE IRISH FRIEND POSSE (and token canadian) CURRENTLY BETTER KNOWN AS "THE GUYS"!!!

- {eerie haunting music... like, haunted house organ!} I'm about to lose potentially 50% of my valuable free time - particularly given the fact that this coinsides with the new series of Prison Break, Nip/Tuck, and Boston Legal. Crappity Crap Crap.

+ {BOW chikka wao wao...} I got into the MSc course at University of Portsmouth!! Thanks no doubt in part to the glowing recommendations written for me by dear P and P. That and my impeccable scholastic record (ROFLMAO) and oh so many academic acheivements at the illustrious Universities Wyoming and Pretoria. My new classes start online on the 1st of April and I'll have to put my head down and ass up for the next 2 years, but hey, at least my brain won't melt. Plus the office is paying for it. Of course that means "I'm paying for it" but actually... not really... ah, business ownership! How you perplex me so!
(if I have 2 Masters degrees, does that make me a Master-Master? or an MSc2 (squared)?)

- {ditching the music thing} WHAT IS UP with all these people grilling me about why I didnt vote for Obama in the primary? I mean, I know the guy's a rock star, I like the man just fine, I will not be devistated if he wins, but DAMN! It's reaching borderline-obnoxious territory. I know this is africa, I know I *like* africa, but that does not neccisarily dictate that I will vote for a guy because his dad is from Kenya!?!? WTF!?!? (White mom from Kansas ~ahem~) Let me just say the following: BARACK OBAMA SUPPORTS INCREASING NUCLEAR POWER. He wants more nuclear reactors. He has no solution for nuclear waste disposal nor nuclear decommissioning. Not to mention on every other environmental "stance" that he has, he just basically says "what she said!!!!" and copies Hillary about a week after she makes her position known. Meaning he's wavering and shifting and dancing all over the place, changing his mind like Mary does bedsheets! (thats like twice a week) The environment is my platform. For christs sake I'm a frickin environmental scientist for a living! So yes, it matters to me - even more so than someone's rock star quotient. I should think this would be obvious by now. But then again I suppose the people who've been grilling me have no notion whatsoever about the real issues in the US political world and are pretty much basing everything they say and think on really uh, substantial points of merit such as race and sex and "what Oprah said!". Nice! I'll stop being annoyed now.

+ Hillary has a law degree from Yale where she specialised in childrens' rights and child welfare advocacy. That is my MOTHER's platform. HAHAHA. Where I'm going with is: Let's see how the mominator attempts to wiggle her way out of admitting to my dad that Hillary would naturally be her candidate of choice. I mean, yes, the mother is a registred democrat (calling herself an "independant" in public) and child welfare and advocacy is her profession. She used to attend conferences in DC where Hillary was the keynote speaker and come back home telling me how "inspiring" and "brilliant" and "outstanding in her field" HC was. I think she never had an inkling back then that old H could ever run for president. Because see, NOW my mom's on the old-age train to conservative land and if she even shows one iota of interest in voting for the woman most of her Mid-MO crowd (including my dad) are portraying as "out of control liberal"... oh I'm just giddy with excitement. This is gonna be good.

- All these visitors in Feb and March and June (the SIL is coming with her little friend now too) and July are going to make it so that we spend a bunch of money and then probably won't get to go away for a big holiday AGAIN this year. Will I EVER get to go anywhere else again??? The thing is I LOVE the visitors and I would totally have more over every month of my life, but the problem is that you spend monnnnnnnnneyyyyyy. WHY!!! I want to go to Australia... Mauritius... The Seychelles... Cape Verde... WHEN!??!?! NEVER!?!?!?! I think after this year from now on my friends will be required to come to one of the above places if they want to come to Africa. I will start a rumour that Botswana has fallen into civil disarray and that the currency has skyrocketed, (how the hell would that work?) making holidays here extremely dangerous and expensive. Whereas now Cape Verde... now THATS cheap! And tropical! Not to mention due to my new university course next year will necessitate us utilising one of our "holidays" to go to (gag) crappy PORTSMOUTH for a week-long mandatory class attendence. bleahhhhh... Yep, I see a big fat "never" looming on that Mauritius horizon.

+ Overall I am totally happy with my physical fitness now. FINALLY! After what, 10 years? It took a good 5 months of 3 days a week at the gym to get here, plus serious diet maintenence, but I looked in the mirror today and went: "cool." I know I'm at the right place because not only is my waistline in check and right where I always wanted it to be, but also I'm eating "normal", i.e. some bread and noodles and rice here and there within my diet, as well as the odd recipe including former no-nos such as satay sauce, mayonnaise or coconut milk/cream, etc. That means I've finally got the fitness level up to a point where it is taking care of a "normal diet" for me.

- Petra is going to move away from the neighbourhood and back into town. BOO HOO! Our best buddy is abandoning us. She still doesn't feel safe living by herself out in the bush and I don't think she reeeeally wants to adopt a puppy or 2. :~( ALthough it won't be any different from when she was living in her flat in town when we first got here, it's still sad because I'll miss having someone just to pop around to within 5 minutes notice, sit out on the verandah overlooking the savannah... drinking savannah.... sad sad times. But at least she hasn't started looking yet, and knowing this girl she'll probably procrastinate for a good few months, bringing us up to winter before she heads for more urban pastures.

+ Reggie is being very good at waking us up when he has to go pee during the night. I'm so in love with that old bastard - he comes over to my side of the bed and goes "cry cry" once and then if I don't react, it's.... 1 paw.... scratch, scratch (on the mattress)....then 2 paws.... double scratch, scratch!.... and I get up and let him out. He goes wee, turns around, runs back to bed. End of story. It's no big deal since I'm a light sleeper anyway and I can always get back to sleep. It just makes me happy that we've sorted out this system because I was dreading the day when my old grandpa beagle has to sleep outside at night. It's like as soon as that day comes, I know we're on the road to goodbye. But at any rate, we haven't had any accidents for a week now, now that we "understand each other" (i.e. I understand that my dog's bladder has about a 6-hour threshold and needs to be dealt with accordingly).
