My Year of Meaningful (2011)

"Quality takes you out of yourself, makes you aware of the world around you." - R.M. Pirsig

Paragraphs and questions

I have been sooooooooooo draggin my feet with respect to blogging lately. I have no idea why but I've just kinda blanked in general. The puppy committee and work have been keeping me jumping, not to mention that whole STUDENT THING I have gotten myself into. Eish, I read about 100 pages of management and organizational theory this weekend. While I find it interesting, I also find it draining. But I'm not dissing the course or anything - this is my latest Everest and by god I'm gonna bust a move on the damn thing. Speaking of Bust a Move - hilarious Scrubs episode? The one where JD and Turk go to a medical conference and "Old MC the worlds most notorious Young MC tribute act" is there? All that this 40+ year old guy can say is "Bust a Move"? Hilllllaaaaaaaaarrrrious!! (for me. I know.)

Anyway, if everything goes right this weekend, the Mr. may just actually FINALLY be legal! This stupid work permit got lost in the bureaucratic red tape machine for over a year now, and it looks like he might actually get it WOO HOO! If so, we have decided to celebrate by going away for a weekend with just the two of us, which is exactly what we need. No parties, no weekend obligations, maybe some light (course) reading by the Marico river and some time to really appreciate these gorgeous autumn days that are racing past us and totally under appreciated. The town is one of these quirky weirdo-outposts just over the SA border, not too far away for a weekend spin, and totally gorgeous and quaint. We blaze through it at 100kmph every time we drive between here and Jozi, and keep meaning to stop but NO TIME!

FINALLY saw "Juno" this weekend - that was definitely my favourite of all the Oscar Noms this year. It flashed me back to high school and pretty much (teenage pregnancy aside) gave me one of those warm fuzzy nostalgia feelings and was funny, too. I thought it was, IMHO, the best-all-round movie I've seen this year. Like, the characters were well developed, the plot wasn't too cliche, and it was that funny kind of dry humour that I like. Ticked all the boxes for me, not least because that crazy kid is just so damn likable. And I LOVED the J.K. Simmons character - OMG he was fantastic. Even though I just kept thinking: ahhhh, L&O police psychiatrist Dr. Emil Skoda...

I watched a very disturbing episode of Full on Food this weekend which made a lot of ethical issues bubble up inside of me regarding mass-produced non-organic meat. I was bawling in front of the tv. I'm still wrestling with that one. One thing I DO know for sure is that I 100% abhor the way my in-laws run their dairy farm, and that I have a real problem with halaal & kosher butchers. What I hate about living in BW sometimes is just the non-existence of choice, for example, if I should decide that I only want to buy free range organic meat from now on, then how the hell would I be able to do it? The answer is pretty much: not. Well, ok, all our beef is free range (whew) but the method in which it's slaughtered... eeeeeehhhh. I can wrestle with that. Chicken breasts, I can get free range frozen in bulk from W's... but then that's halaal. See? no choice. Not to mention that here in BW, pretty much EVERY restaurant or eating establishment is halaal. These are the times I think longingly about living back in places like DC or Melbourne. Severe lack of choices.

And now some burning questions:
  • Why do Australian males have to be so insanely competitive?
  • Why is my MIL so completely brainless?
  • Will I really hate our new French intern girl like T. says I probably will?
  • Where will I be in 5 years?
  • Where will we be at xmas this year?
  • Why would anyone stay in a waste-of-time relationship with a nutjob?
  • Why did they have to move the new season of 30 Rock to 7pm Friday nights?
  • Why didn't anyone ever tell me how delicious W's wholegrain Omega-3 seeded bread is when it's toasted with butter and cheese and tomato????
  • Why are kids today so entitled and spoiled and coddled?
  • Did Jay-Z and that devil-spawn Beyonce actually get married???

I'm gonna be sooooooooooo busy this week. It's gonna hurt.

Jill what is your beef (pardon the pun) with halal and Kosher butchers? I am just curious. I saw Juno this weekend and I liked it except for the conspicuous product placement, but I guess that's unavoidable. Snoutly the Sniggledy Snort says a woofly snoutly hello. - Peter S

peety poo cockellytoo - you know kosher/halaal meat is meant to have their throats slit and then be hung upside down to bleed to death, right? but what really happens in this day & age of high-speed production of ritually slughtered meat is that animals can be shackeld around a rear leg, hoisted into the air, and then hang, fully conscious, upside down on the conveyer belt for between two and five minutes-and occasionally much longer if something goes wrong on the killing line before the slaughterer makes his cut. It's all full of stress and panic and shrieking. Most conventional butchers these days would stun the animal before slaughtering it. But I still dig on those Kosher pickles. mmmm.
