My Year of Meaningful (2011)

Life in NAM

ahhhhhh whyyyyyyyyy do children have to make you sick!?!?

OK so she already gave us both the flu in her first few days, and now we all have sore throats and colds. grrrr... I should've seen this one coming though, as coming out of K. State hospital she was probably carrying every bug in the book. eish! we went there yesterday to see what it looked like (just to make a visual connection with where our little pumpkin seed spent the first 3 months of her life) and jeeeeeeeeeebus, the Dr. was right when she said "she was probably better off in the river!" Apparently there's still no food there. Although reportedly the bats that were living in the operating room have recently been exterminated.

Well anyway since we've been here we've been to a sushi restaurant (woo hoo! although the sushi was relatively average), a german restaurant (with "Fascinating Steve"), and gotten a movie rental membership. I've been eating up the posh gym (even through sickness! I can't help it! it's too awesome!), and we found a good hiking trail.

Fascinating Steve is funny. He's about 37-39 years old, American, and a film maker. Apparently he was one of the big directors on that Leo DiC enviro-film. Now he's making green documentaries all over the place. He is just as gay as he is... confident (?). Our dinner was interesting to say the least. The Joo was very good and hid under the table in her little chair, sleeping like a rock, even when the crazy german owner's dog came up to her and started barking in her face. Trooper.

I love the shops here, at least you can find stuff like Greek dips and organic produce and all that good stuff. And there's Sooooooooooooo many more restaurants we have to try. Next weekend we're going to go to the coast (3 hrs west of here)... my heart is longing to see actual waves and sand and the good German Brauhaus es that are out there. ahhh... I haven't been there since I was living in Pretoria 9 years ago and came out to do some sand boarding and quad biking on the dunes all by my lonesome. Back in my "I gotta go find myself" days of hitchhiking and wandering. All I remember thinking was that I simply HAD to get back there someday with the love of my life because it is just all too beautiful and romantic to be wasted on a single backpacker totally uninterested in anything but where the next beer was geographically located.

Since we only have 4 TV channels (which all suck) it's great to have the video club membership, notwithstanding the fact that said video shop is in the straight-ghetto and I'm nervous even leaving Billy tied up outside the shop! And the selection isn't all that great. But we've watched, so far:

Kite Runner
Heartbreak Kid (with Ben Stiller), and
Step Brothers

We'll take a walk down there in a couple hours and get something else. I'm trying to think of 3 non-new movies that I actually want to see, because you can get 3 for 3 days... but I always freeze up in the video store and can NEVER REMEMBER what I just said I wanted to look for. Ugh!

Just wait 'til she brings home colds, chicken pox and lice. Kids are petri dishes, man!
