My Year of Meaningful (2011)

"Quality takes you out of yourself, makes you aware of the world around you." - R.M. Pirsig

THE LAST DAY AND CELEBRATION ABOUNDS!

It's unbelievable that I made it through the month. Absofrickin unbelievable.
And unless Brandon has lost a whopping 5lbs in less than 24 hours, all I can say is....
SOMEBODY'S GETTIN' A LANDLINE!!!!

I'm not really even sure what to write here, now, because since I have fulfilled the requirements of THE BET, I technically don't have to write down my notebook list, since I don't *technically* have to do them within 24 hours "and blog about it".

In memory of the Month of Self-Betterment That Was (2009), I thought I'd conclude this with a final list, and a few photos of the powers that be (i.e. my notebook).

List for the weekend and on:
* Go to Mica for plastic cover sheet
* Find lino
* Remind The Mr. to pay BPC & email Doug receipt on monday
* Email Animal Peeps notice to mailing list
and finally, THE BOSS:

You can see how tiny and compact and convenient he is, and believe me I will continue to make use of this handy little tool, and recommend it to others.

However, the "not having to blog about it every 24 hours" thing will be a relief, because not only is it boring as shyte, it's just a pain. I'm lucky I made it through 4 weeks. There were about 2 times that I nearly missed it by either a) not having internet, b) leaving the laptop at work or c) leaving it til the last minute and nearly forgetting.

And as well as Mr. Notebook, I have learned a valuable lesson in this here month of self-betterment. TURN OFF THE DAMN INTERNET BETWEEN 10-4. I have to admit I'm very much considering letting this be an indefinite change in my M-F behaviour. It's hard, especially when you just want to log on and check *one* teeeeeeeeeny tiny little thing on El Interweb, but hey I've gotten a lot done this month (work wise). And having fast 'net at the new place will be helpful too, for handling this stuff after hours.

We'll see.

In the meantime, I'm blowin this joint and heading back to "the old neighbourhood" for one last night sleeping there.... we're sleeping across the street in one of Linda's little cottages on the river. Alan just got up here from Jozi and will be on hand for a braai and revelry in the suburb that was our home for over 2 years... ah nostalgia. Then tomorrow it's up with the sparrow's fart and off to G-village with Mary so that the 4 of us can get stuck in to unpacking and sorting out the new place. YAY! I thought this day would never come!

Photos to come soon!

Day 19: 1 more

So the internet is patchy and nothing is working for me today but tomorrow is MOVE DAY and then Saturday is MOVE IN Day!

I can't spend much time on this b/c we're flat out at the moment so here we go:

* Order olives
* Order pizza (b/c we have no facilities to cook dinner anymore!)

That's pretty straightforward.

Day 18: and only 2 more to go!

OK so yesterday's list = finished.

Gym = gymmed
Other blog = blogged
Carpet guy = hounded

On top of that, carpet = done and dusted, being installed on saturday amidst all our UNpacking in the new place. But that's fine by me. I just want as much done as possible before SheofDC comes a knockin on the thursday! And that's going to be hard because there's no weekend (to do stuff) between the moving wknd and when she gets here.

For example, I gotta find some lino for the upstairs bathroom. You can't tile it bc the floors are all wonky warped wood (with existing shocking pink flowery 1950s granny-lino on there already!) If SheofDC sees that crap on there she's gonna puke all over it. And we're gonna attack my house with the wrath of re-decoration while she's here so I don't want the fruits of our labour in the upstairs bathroom to have to rest on a canvas of ugly old pink flowery linoleum. But am I being too optimistic to think that it can be sourced, purchased, and laid in 3 days???

And curtains. I've been losing sleep the last two nights (well that and having intruders trying to break in at 2am last night doesnt help) over CURTAINS! All the windows in the new place are different sizes. There's more of them. Some rooms have 2 sets of windows! AGH! what do I do!?!?!? I can't sleep without total darkness.... and all these things take time.... blast it! And we were going to buy Petra's dining table, but she's in SA til the 10th, so won't be able to pick it up and move it in, meaning I'm without the NICE dining table, and have to make do with the ugly old ghetto one. AGH! It's like the end of the world!!!

Right well anyway I see the writing on the wall. I know what's gonna happen. It's gonna be all-systems-go-meltdown with me in Moving Mode from saturday morning til the sun goes down on Wednesday. Just as well the month of self-betterment will be over then, because there won't be time for anything else. My husband is going to crumble under the psychosis of a woman re-decorating her new nest. I always make fun of him because he only has a certain threshold for the number of hours he can organize, clean, and decorate.... and I dont. I can go all night like a crack addict in these situations. House Nazi.

List for today:

* try and order that shower curtain for SheofDC to deliver to me
* pay for carpet (done)
* write aunt P.

I have to write my Aunt P. because she just delivered the news to me and the rest of the fambly that my very favourite 2nd cousin is getting divorced. We'll call him Uncle Mike. Let's just say that Uncle Mike was hands down, my mentor of coolness growing up. I literally mourned when he got engaged and married to (notwithstanding the fact she is a great girl and i always liked her) his soon-to-be-ex., because I just didnt think that any chick was cool enough for my idol.

Well it looks like it didn't work out after all, even after what, 15 years of marriage. I just wonder what it was - they were such a cute couple and totally in tune with each other and complete like-minded personalities. It's scary. We all thought they were the golden couple. I just don't know what the story is. ~sigh~

All I know today is that i'm celebrating because crazy landlord wench actually just gave us our deposit back. And bought 1500 bucks worth of stuff off me. And no aggro involved. Nice.

Day 17

Well yesterday was a success.
The Mr. and I got up the hill just before the sun went down, so our exercise was in the bag (which I'm worried about this week, being that it's so hectic and full of anomalies due to the impending move, we may not get ample time for fitness & may consume one too many easy-over-healthy meals), I wrote Podgey, I called Frank (we're getting new carpet in the new master bedroom - yay), and This American Life was entertaining as ever.

Today, I have to:
* go to gym at lunch
* write on The Other blog at some stage (which I promised the Mr. I would do)
* call the carpet guy
* chase up the carpet guy

and I dont really know what else.

I'm in such a good mood these days, things are happening, life is looking good, and there's no reason 2009 really can't be the year of good luck and love and all things positive. I'm not even going to end that sentence with "let's see how long that lasts" or anything cynical like that, I'm just going to ride this wave as far as it takes me and be thankful the whole way.

I was up with the birds as I had to be in G-village to meet Frank at (hack) 7:30 AM! agh! and that's a 30 minute drive through the bush from our present house, so yeah, I was out the door at 7. bleh! But once there, I was just so happy to be there (at the new house) even though the existing tenants still have a bunch of crap in it. My initial thoughts are: the master b.r. was a lot smaller than I'd pictured (which isn't a big deal b/c it's still HUGE), and the guest rooms were smaller. But again not a big deal. I still wish the kitchen had a double sink instead of just one (ghetto!) but otherwise I'm still as excited as before. OH and the stoep outside DOES have a proper roof over it so we CAN put our extra couch out there and not worry about the rain getting on it. More living space, woo hoo!

I couldn't take photos b/c Existing Tenants were still there and being all grumpy that Frank and I were walking around in their space, but that'll all come in a few days. Friday I can get over there and have a look, to be exact. Maybe photos then. Oh, I did note that there are 2 really beautiful cathedral windows in stained glass above the fireplace in the living room. Frank said he rescued them from an old church that was torn down. How cool. Existing Tenants had them covered up with ugly orange curtains the first time we checked the place out. bizarre.

Day 16: only 4 days to go!

I have nothing really good to supplement this with today, mainly because the weekend was filled with nothing but PACKING. AAAGHH! It's so hard! But, we are professionals and managed to get an 8-room house all packed up (except necesary dishes, food, and our bed & clothes) in just under 2 days. Rock and ROLL, Team Cornpone!

Saturday night, to make things pleasant after a long day boxing up and standing on our feetsies, we went out for a nice steak at our local. We sat next to a table of people from Alabama/Kentucky. Ahhh evesdropping on that crowd was so nostalgic. I think I've gotten over my post-holiday depression by now (what with all the big excitement and moving and self-betterment and what not) but I still find myself thinking of Virginia a lot and wondering when my next chance of seeing my friends are, and hearing more voices shouting out "WELL BLESS YOUR HEART!!!" It doesn't help that P. is leaving for Cape Town this week and won't be back til 10 March, at which point she will have a mere 7 days before leaving me forever!! Follow that on by 2 wks and then The Mr. loses his BFF, Gerrit, as well. It's alllllllll happening...

Anyway notwithstanding any of that, it was a great weekend and I'm happy with our packing progress. Now to just figure out how to live comfortably in a house with a bed, a couch, a tv and a few dishes for the next 5 days. It's like cricket & tumbleweed grand central in there, yo.

Otherwise:
- highlighter was brought homw
- Podgey = written

For Today:
* Climb K-hill
* Call Frank
* Download TAL
* Write Podgey

there. i think i can do that.

Labels: ,

Day 15: only 1 week left

Well OBVIOUSLY I brought in Digital Fortress for Leto. It was the last thing on my mind before going to bed. So that's no problem.

Today:

* Bring home highlighter
* Email podgey

The only other thing I really have to do is start PACKING. That is SO not cool. I hate packing. And packing also means for the next week I'm going to have to start living without the stuff I've packed. I guess i just need to pick 7 outfits and keep them handy, and I dont know what I'm gonna do about dishes, etc., but hey. I'll have to figure out something.

Podgey has a really fantastic idea, as he's one of the casualties that has fallen due to my internet embargo between 10-4 (excluding lunch).... it's: "every day you just put 'email podgey' on the notebook list!" now why the HELL didn't I think of that?!?!?

Last now was the last time we will have eaten dinner with my remaining BW BFF, Petra, at our existing residence. sniff, sniff.
She brought over a giant spinach & cheese quiche, and a gorgeous salad with feta, capers, and butternut. yum. I opened up one of my prize Pinot Grigio bottles and we dined under the jalapeno chilli lights out on the stoep. sniff, sniff

COULD SOME MORE OF MY FRIENDS FROM OVERSEAS PLEASE COME TO BW?!?!? PLEASE??!?!

Day 14 - whew. barely. again.

just sliding in again.... at 10:30 pm. Included having to turn around 1/2 way home from the office b/c I realized the laptop was still at the office and I hadn't done this damn THING yet!!!

my list is complete - all scratches. it was a FRICKIN busy day, me all alone in the office and all, but everything is done. whew.

to do for tomorrow is simply:

* bring "Digital Fortress" in for Leto.

Petra just made dinner for us and i nearly forgot yet again (!) that I had to do this! AGH!

Day 13: And I have to do this twice today

Since I already wrote on here earlier today, I can keep this brief, as The Mentalist is gonna come on soon and I've got all these dang emails to catch up on....

Yesterday:
- Number of pages per day: calculated = 7. That's not too bad.
- Banjo: strummed
- First 7 pages of Pollution Control&Monitoring : read
- Gym: gymmed
- Ask Mr. to call Frank: done (to no avail)
- Rough sketch: actually already done.

Today:
- Write Sandra
- Write Podgey
- run
- read pages

not too much on there. aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I'll be glad when Feb. is over.... but I will admit, it's made me more diligent. what can i say, it was a good lesson! And I think I can definitely keep the internet sanction up, I realize I can get most of what i need to do done before 10 and after 4 or at home. We'll see.

Labels:

Day 12: Alright, I get it.

I see now.... if you force yourself to do all the crap on your to-do list on the day you write it down, it gets done. And then you dont have a 10-mile long to-do list. Jeez, you'd think it was rocket science or something. It sounds like that's just an intro sentence or two, but it really did hit me today. AH-HAaaaa! Got it! There IS a method to this madness. I see it on Eric too - he's messing up all the time these days. Mistake after mistake after unnecessary mistake, and I'm sitting there muttering to myself: "for F's sake, dumbass, if you'd just get yourself a damn little notebook..."

Anyway here we go:
yesterday . . .
-TAL - listened (it was quite touching this week - Valentines theme)
-Yoga - yoga'd. But I've got a new strategy since my heart just isn't in it anymore - from now on on mondays the Mr. and I will clime K. Hill instead. I wouldn't let myself quit yoga and just do nothing in place of it, but i needed something i would actually look forward to doing... I think that's the ticket.
-Graphics and adverts - still working
-School forms - filled out
-2nd round of photos - uploaded.
And wait - wait -

BONUS...

like not only did i do all that crap, I ripped about 6 cds that I'd been meaning to do for yonks now. AND I went over to the internet people for a couple hours and started sorting out the Animal Peeps website. AND I called the Mominator to wish her a happy bday. AND I even made dinner last night even though technically it was the Mr'.s turn. But I want to give him as much time as he wants to play his guitar these days. He's learning really fast and I don't want to stop him, since I see how much he enjoys it and how seriously he's taking his 30-45 minutes of "practice time" diligently, every night.

So today, anyway:
I got nearly nothin.
except:
* Calculate the number of pages i have to read in the new courses per day
* Play banjo
* Read at least SOME of the new course stuff
* Go to gym (done already)
* Ask The Mr. to call Frank
* Rough sketch more graphics

And now to end, some romantic images from the tres posh lodge from the weekend - I couldnt believe the spread they layed on for Valentine's day. We came back from stalking wild animals in the bush saturday evening to a room full of rosepetals and candles and sparkling red wine next to the bathtub. And a 5-star dinner by candle light. it was soooooooooo worth the wait.

Day 11: downhill slope

Now I'm feeling the burn - today is a perfect example of a day that I do NOT want to sit down and type this all out! But what the hell, I'm sure it aint a picnic for Brandon to be losing 20lbs over there.

On the list for today:
* Listen to T.A.L. podcast
* Go to yoga (I gained 2kg over the weekend!)
* Animal Peeps graphics and adverts
* Fill out forms for school
* Upload 2nd round of photos from wknd.

ok today i'm tempted to put work issues on there - but i'm not going to. But seriously, I've got some beef with a certain government department that I need to either write a strongly-worded letter to, or make a loaded phone call to. I couldn't believe it when this morning this total COW was screaming at me down the phone line (what a way to start a monday morning) and behaving like an absolute ass-face. Oh boy is SHE gonna get dobbed in. Unfortunately her supervisor isn't in (he's at a workshop) but just wait til he is... i have to remember to keep calling back.

This weekend was great! We did a lot of relaxing and looking at large critters. I saw my first leopard! Rock n roll!!!

day 10 - ha ha!

i just managed!
i'm here sitting outside in the bush catching a cellphone signal from Botswana that is allowing me to just coast in under 1200am midnight with my blog!
HA! Brandon! HA!

ok, since i'm transmitting this at about 1 bmp per hour, i'll just say:

list from yesterday: done.
today's:

* nothing.
* do nothing. Enjoy your day off.

signing out from Madikwe, South Africa...

oh yeah and I saw an amazing lion kill today that was like nothing else I've ever seen in the wild. amazing. pictures to come, next week.

Day 9: basically the 1/2 way point.

This will be brief. Like, this would be the kind of day where if it weren't for THE BET, I would just ignore the bloggy bloggerton in favour of just sitting in my chair staring out the window and getting ripped into emotional shreds by Bob Dylan. Emotional. Shreds. ~sigh~

The only thing I can think to blog about yesterday's list is that I'm liking MGMT (the band). Exploration was done, songs were downloaded. And happiness abounds. Oh yes, and the Brandon was gtalked, except that the retard-o-modem sucks arse and connection was patchy at times, but it was nice, b/c I miss my buddy.

The bonus of last night was that Sweet Dick Pete was online so I got to chat with him too. it was Tzipi!

So today, here's what we've got:

* Keep trying to get onto the UP email
* ABB CD
* Get food for Animal Peeps mtg.
* Pack for tomorrow
* Don't forget to do this stuff tomorrow morning, before leaving.

I'm looking forward to the (as we like to call it) dirty weekend away with the Mr. I just hope and pray there's no chirren there, as this particular lodge does allow the chirren.

Oh yeah, my new semester has started and I'm not impressed with this whole having to start reading technical crap every night til June again. BARF! I'm thinking that this weekend, though, I might just bring a nice fiction book along and read it anyway (I finished the Omnivore's Dilemma - highly recommended).

Back to getting my soul ripped to fibres of heartbreak....

Labels:

Day 8: and I dont know what.

The List:
-OK the Jury is still out on T.I. but I downloaded the song I heard and will continue to think about it.
-Squash = played. And who woulda thought I'd win? But I did. The Mr. must've been having an off-day.
-B.bush campground = still not answering phone. May resort to txt msg., as advised by Richard.
-Photos for newsletter = downloaded.

Today we're kinda skimpy.
* Rip Allman Brothers "Back Where It All Begins" tonight
* Write Derek
* See about gtalk w/ Brandon
* Investigate the band MGMT

I wonder what I'm gonna do on Friday, since we're leaving for the bush for the wknd. I guess in order to remain compliant with the bet, i'll just have to get up early and do it from home, either that or swing by the office on the way out of town?!!?? Dang, I'm committed.

Adelly tagged me on one of those FB things re: your top 10 songs you cannot live without. HOLY CRACK that was hard. But I managed. I just wish it was "Top 20". I feel like i betrayed some of my favourite tunes.
--------------------------
I really hope my modem works tonight since it's my goof off night.
--------------------------
Random music-inspired memory of the day:
"Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" - Bob Dylan, Nashville Skyline.

I heard this song for the first time in who-knows-how-long today (trying to decide if it should go onto my Top 10 list), and I got a wave of memory consisting of me driving through Iowa to Missouri, listening to this song on repeat and thinking of DMH.

Day 7 - and all the positives

Yesterday:
Groceries - bought. Except there's no FLIPPING limes in this town. How am I supposed to make cold udon noodle salad with no lime?!? (i used lemon)
TLA - downloaded. Eventually. It was definitely the most entertaining one yet. 5 stars.
Campground - contacted, but to no avail. Try again tomorrow.
University course - checked up on and confounded. WTH classes did I sign up for anyway?!?!

Today's list:
* Decide if I like T.I.
* Play squash
* Try camping place again
* AB-N's photos for newsletter
----

This whole Month of Self-Betterment is going quite well.
I'm learning stuff. Useful stuff. Like,

IF YOU WANT TO GET ANY WORK DONE, TURN OF THE DAMN INTER-WEB!!!

(or at least between the hours of 10-4)

In addition to that little gem, can I just say believe it or not, I'm enjoying my job more. OK I still wish I was something interesting, like a psychologist or a horse trainer, or just Professionally Awesome.... but I have to say there's a sweet note of "something-that-is-not-hate" in my working hours over the last week. That is so odd.

I think one reason is that I've learned that I can indeed do some things while listening to iTunes or some of the podcasts that I've decided to start downloading during this little human experiment. (This American Life, All Songs Considered, and the weekly Best of YouTube -nb: that's a video one, so it doesn't get watched til we're off-the-clock)

I always said I was the type of gal who can't listen to something (tv, music, radio) if I'm writing. And given that 80% of my job is writing reports, I've never even bothered to try. But the thing I'm learning is that I can do CERTAIN parts of the report-writing while listening. For example, I can set up the document, I can do some cut & pasteys from other reports, I can format the thing, I can make charts and tables, etc.... all that stuff, I can actually listen to iTunes in the meantime and boy howdy, does that make all the difference in the world.

Man it's like 2009 is going to be the year of epiphany.
Who'da thought?!

I watched the Grammys (24 hours behind, as everything else on tv here) and was soooooooo happy for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Raising Sand was my Big Musical Discovery for the whole of 2008, and I love them both as much separately as together. AND they played live during the awards. Awesome.

I went running with the Mr. yesterday instead of going to yoga. I need a break from it or something. I just need to WANT to go again. I'm finding it a little on the yawn-side lately. No reason in particular, I'm just letting the whole "avoiding unpleasant things" thing play itself out and see how it goes. Not that yoga was unpleasant. Oh no, on the contrary I love it. I just need to avoid the burnout.

Avoiding situations of potential aggro and stress at all costs is a good strategy. It's been working wonders for the Mr., who has made so many changes to his behaviour in an attempt to bypass all the aggro he managed to find himself in last year. For example: trying to find an auto trader to trade in old car and dealing with the messers = difficult. Money to be made = high potential, but Dickheads to be encountered and messiness to be had = high potential. Whereas: Putting old car in newspaper and missing out on a few bucks but having people come to you = easy. His new strategy is to make life more pleasant by making life easier. Hence, drop the Treasurer gig with the Animal Peeps, and put the car in the newspaper. Move into house in G-village that isn't a total dump in need of major fixing, instead of saving a few bucks moving into a dive (with more slacker overseas landlords) in our Priority 1 neighbourhood. OK I know I'm going back a month now, but it's proving a good strategy. I recommend it. And the new Mudcrutch album. And the Hold Steady album. And Raising Sand.

That is all.

OK I've lost count of days but I think it's 6.

Let's get this out of the way first:

Today
* Groceries
* Find out WTF is wrong with This American Life download (it aint' going)
* Contact B.bush campground for 8 April
* Check up on university course

----
OK back to life.
This weekend was pretty fun. Friday we went out for dinner at the Lantern with the Chinese lads on friday, which was a riot in itself. It always is. They spend a buttload of money on stuffing us, and get drunk off of 3 glasses of wine. Then the guys around here proceed to refer to me as "Miss Jirr" for the next week at least, thereafter.

Saturday we spent in town doing everything. From dropping off the recycles to shopping for I-dont-even-remember-what. Then we came back home, got ready, and then went to a dinner party, one of the large slew of P.'s going-away events that is about ready to start flowing.

This weekend I finally gave in and let the Mr. convince me (finally) that he should step down as Honorable Treasurer for the Animal Peeps this coming fiscal year. I had been denying it and denying it for so long, trying to convince him that these are just the growing pains but that he'll get into the swing of things if he just hangs on, but alas. I think it's terminal. It's just that he gets all cranky and angry when he has to do the accounts, and fair enough, he has to put up with so much CRAP from the committee and them not keeping him in the loop and too many cooks in the kitchen, etc etc., I just don't want it to be something he hates. But that means I'll probably also step down and just continue to volunteer and stay on as editor of the newsletter, but not on the committee. I'm sad about not pushing through, especially since i'm not normally one to let the bastards get me down, but one of the reasons we agreed to be on said committee was because it would be something nice to do together, and, well, hey when one of you is miserable then you're both miserable, and - life, and 2009 are too short. The year of no aggro is underway, I guess.

I give Tropic Thunder 1 and a half thumbs up. It may not have been the laugh-fest I imagined, but it did allow me to realize that my best friend in Ireland looks like Jay Baruchel, which meant it was almost like watching a movie with Podgey - bonus!

And finally, my divine husband has planned what is surely to be the 2nd best valentine's day ever (the first obviously being the one last year when all our mates were here and we went to Madikwe)... we're going away for the weekend to this place. he got a last-minute deal on it, and aside from the fact that they allow children (highly unusual at safari lodges), I think it's going to be fantastic. Maybe even the leopards will be out and about celebrating the big cheesey day. I just can't believe we're making it to Madikwe 2x in 2 years! Normally this place is way out of our budget zone.

I had a dream last night that boggled my mind. It was about someone I have been struggling with coming to terms with either a) giving up on ever talking to again, or b) trying one last time to actually rectify the burnt bridge (which I believe I am the one primarily responsible for). It was so vivid, but in said dream, I was able to finally after 9 years apologize for a bunch of stuff, say everything on my mind, set things straight, and forge ahead. It was so therapeutic it was like a weight off my shoulders for the first time in years. But alas, I woke up and realized that it wasn't real life. Struggle. Struggle....

Day 5 - ONLY ONE WEEK OF THIS CRAP DOWN?

OK can I just say it's NOT the turning off the internet and letting my online scrabble prowress go to the dogs that is difficult... it's the whole making-sure-to-write-about-it that is the pain in the hole.

But I digress.

Yesterday:
Car - fetched.
Running - begrudgingly run.
Coffee - drunk (along with brownie = eaten).
Dinner - confirmed.
Articles - compiled.

To elaborate, I suppose as the challenge goes: I'm now a driver of the most environmentally friendly car available for purchace in this country. We explored all the options of hybrids (not available here), even attempting to import a Prius from SA or Japan, and that failed as well. There are no mechanics here that know how to maintain or fix them and given the fact that we live in the land of brainless kamikaze drivers, a good mechanic is an imperative. So anyway we got the next best thing. The S40. This is the one that Australia has started giving tax breaks on, if you drive one, because it's diesel technology is so efficient and environmentally conscious. So there you go. I'm a swedish car driver now. AGH!

The running - wasn't good. I blame the fatcakes we ate at coffeetime on tuesday. or something like that. I struggled with 5km, I have no idea why. not cool. oh so not cool. I used to do it in 29mins (before xmas) now it was 34. I need to work on that.

So after I gave my huge nervioso presentation to the DEA yesterday, and after picking up said automobile, The Mr. was so proud of my performance that he agreed to playing hookey from work for awhile so we could enjoy a nice cappuccino and a brownie at our favourite cafe. It was nice. It was also nice to get that thing over with as it had been bogging me down since I found out I would have to do it. I hate defending my work - it's like doing a thesis all over again. BARF! but the thing went really well, and I am really pleased. Even the Director of DEA was really pleased. whew. I deserved that damn cappuccino. And the brownie.

Today -
*Photograph T's canvas hanging up
*Collect photos of dog move for article
*Shop for ipod connection for new car

TOnight we're going out for dinner with the Chinese. To eat chinese. yum. but those chinese guys are crazy. serious. I would elaborate, but my time is UP!

Day 4 - and other stuff b/c my list is too short

OK so yesterday I had a short list, and I completed it. There's not much to blog about regarding the whole 2 things on it (um, I sent the Mr. to the store to get the dish soap while he was there getting smoothie stuff anyway, and Eric & I stopped off at the Gallery to get the big framing job on the way back to the office from our airport audit - it looks great! Photos to come. Oh yeah, the background of that ((I suppose this is what Brandon meant about "do it and blog about it"?)) is that for xmas this year, back in the hometown, my old friend the Tisheroo -who's an amazing graphic designer- had made us a ginormous canvas wall hanging of our corporate logo, all jazzed up with some african landscapes, etc. Once we got it back here, we had to get it mounted so we could hang it up. It's like over 1x1 meters in size.)

Today is also short, but here it is. At lunchtime and I already have several scratched out already:

* pick up new car (done!)
* go running
* go for romantic afternoon coffee with the Mr. after big presentation (done!)
* confirm dinner with the Chinese guys for tomorrow
* edit SPCA articles & compile

Here's the "in other news" part -
We've been watching movies. Burn After Reading, which I thought was great compared to No Country for Old Men, but PLEASE, Coens, can you not just make SOMETHING even HALFWAY comparable to Fargo? Jeez like that's all I ask. Although I have to say (and rarely do I say this) I absolutely LOVED Brad Pitt's character. Gawd, he was hilarious as Chad. I loved, loved, loved it.

Music. I'm really enjoying The Hold Steady's album "Stay Positive". It's just Springsteeny enough to make me rest assured that Rock n Roll is not dead, but not Springsteeny enough to make me gag (I'm not a HUGE Bruce fan). The Mr. is enjoying Sheryl Crow's "Detours" album, and I CAN NOT GET ENOUGH OF Mudcrutch. For those who wouldn't know (because they're not me, i.e. obsessed with Tom Petty) that's Tom Petty's old band from his High School years in Florida, and although they were together for several years, they never released an album. Imagine that - waiting 30-some odd years to release you debut album.

OK well there, that's all I've got. And now with the new self-betterment policy, I'm going to have to try harder to actually think of things other than The Notebook to pontificate. Difficult. Oh, and Brandon: SheofDC is mad at you b/c this whole thing has bumped me off her gchat radar. So take THAT! :D

In the meantime I am still missing a "punishment" for if I fail on my end of the bargain. Help. But technically I think the challenger has to issue it, considering that I came up with the whole "he has to get a landline, if he fails" part of his.

Day 3 - it's starting to hurt, almost.

GAH! this isn't as easy as it looks!
I've been so busy today and I had to do an inspection in the morning which meant no early-morning internet, I worked through lunch b/c I had to finish my presentation for a 2pm run-through, so no internet at lunch, and now it's past home-time and the Mr. wants to leave, but I have to do this!

Completion:
ok so yesterday I downloaded the damn podcast, only it didn't properly make it onto GOD so thus i ended up listening to it during work instead of at the gym...

went to the gym at lunch, which was good because Leto has bitten me with the fatcake bug, and I ate one at coffee time...

I uploaded photos of Ubs' going away party (and posted them on the FB)...

I wrote Podgey (twice!)

I explained the Easter trip to Alan fairly briefly - (week in Mabuasehube - WOO HOO!) also involved the internet, so i managed to squish it in there somewhere...

I organized the articles.
Whew!

Today, given that work had me so wrapped up what with said inspection and said presentation I have to give tomorrow at the DEA, I haven't had a lot of time to make up a list. But what I *DO* have, I've already accomplished 50% of, so that's a big WOO HOO as well.

* Pick up framing on way back to office from Airport (DONE!)
* Dish soap, and smoothie stuff (Going NOW)

I don't really have anything else - or should I say anything else that I might do is relatively optional (i.e. practice banjo or finish Omnivore's Dilemma - something I have to do before the 9th and I only have like 50 pages left).

I have got NUH else to blog about except the bet now, b/c my brain is too full of work stuff. Is THIS what it's like when you work too much?

OH WAIT, here's something - Brandon and I realized last friday that still one thing is missing from this bet. Sure, if he fails he has to get a landline and call me. But if I fail, what do *I* have to do?? (As IF I'm gonna fail!!!!)

Day 2

This is hard -
I have to be so fast!! 10am comes so flippin' early!!
And, for example, I also have work stuff i have to do in that time too (like today i have to review 2 reports first thing in the morning) which means my time ticks away and I don't even get to write all the emails I wanted to, or check the goss online, or update my goodreads, etc. Especially since we have to go to the gym at lunch so I can't do it then either! AGH!

But...
on the other hand, it really felt good yesterday to click the big fat X up in the top right corner, and know that I was going to get a buttload of poo accomplished. And I did. It was amazing. and as I told Brandon last night, It wasn't even that hard. Why? Because I knew I just HAD to do it. There was no choice anymore, no room for maneuver, no negotiation. Wow. Things are really easy when that's the deal. It's a wonder more 10 year old children don't get that.
HA!

OK so as for my list yesterday: Done, Done, Done, and Done. All of it done. As for B's clause of "you have to blog about it", well, let's see.

*I bought the groceries at lunch,
*I phoned Dpt. of Wildlife to book the campsites for Easter,
*I bought the toilet & tile cleaner along with the groceries, at lunch
*Since I ran out of time online before leaving for yoga at 4:45, I had to do the moms-bday-pressie online with the retard slow-ass modem at home after dinner.
*I googled seasonal veg in the southern hemisphere during the off-time, as well. (All I really learned was the South African season starts with grapes from December to April while citrus, pears and apples are from March to September. Another big one for me is avocados which are March till September. I was looking for veg but hey, fruit knowledge is good too.)

So yeah, feelings of accomplishment, feelings of achievement, etc.
I only regret not being able to send the odd email when my friends write me (although with this strategy, I don't even KNOW when they write me) but truth be told, there's no reason I can't just do that before 10 and after 4. I've just been spoiling myself in real-time for too long now.

And with that, I've gotta go write Podgey now. He's probably wondering what happened to me. I have a precious half-hour left.

In the meantime, the list for today, so far has only got the following:

- write Podgey
- upload photos from Ubs' going away Saturday (which was fun btw, but now i'm down one BFF)
- Go to gym
- Upload This American Life podcast
- Tell Alan the game plan for easter
- Organize SPCA articles from AP, SK, Kasane, and me.

Feb: The Month of Self Betterment - CHALLENGE VERSION

I don't have long, because my playtime is almost up. But the intro to this thread is that Brandon is going to lose 20lbs in the month of February and the deal was that I would kick in something to this bet as well, so that he has someone to share the torture with. If he loses his end of the bargain, he gets a landline installed in his casa so that he can finally call me. What I'm kicking in is 20lbs of self-discipline, and mine has to be 2-fold.
A) Internet goes off between 10am-4pm every weekday, to avoid distraction.
B) The Notebook is on my person 24/7, and every daily to-do has to get crossed off (daily) and I have to blog about it. (He graciously gave me Monday-Friday for this one, since we don't have proper internet at home.) So, M-F it is. ouch!

Today should be pretty easy - I got my emails done way before 10, and the only thing in the notebook for today are the following:

- Toilet & Tile cleaner
- Groceries
- Make reservations for Easter
- Mom - wine - bday
- Look up seasonal veg./southern hemisphere.

Usually I would let at least 3 or 4 of those bleed into the next day, the next week, who knows... maybe never. But now the whip has been cracked. ahhhh It's gonna be a long month!!
